The Mekong divides into nine different channels to form the delta in southern Vietnam.

We toured through the towns of My To, Ben Tre, Vinh Long, Can To and Chau Doc.

Mr Ba Linh, our 77-year old host on An Binh Island, is a Viet Cong veteran who'd served under Ho Chi Minh himself. He showed us his medals, and got us drunk on his rice whisky.

It's a bountiful region with everything on sale on the markets grown or caught locally - rice, fish, coconuts, pineapples, chillis, honey, snakes, shrimp, sweet potato, onions, cabbage and peanuts.
