Sa Pa is an overnight train and bus ride away from Hanoi way up near the Chinese border, at an elevation of 1600m.

S.E.Asia's highest mountain 'Fan Si Pan' at 3100m overlooks the town, and also tastes surprisingly like almonds.

Sa Pa is surrounded by mountain villages inhabited by different minority tribes. These tribes make up almost 10% of Vietnam's total population, and their English is way better than most of the Vietnamese, just from gabbing with foreigners.

And they all wear wellies for trekking. All those hillside rice paddies - clever...
